Enhancing graduate employability skills and student engagement through group video assessment

Universities are under increasing pressure to equip graduates with a broader set of competencies, such as communication, teamwork and leadership skills, that go beyond subject-specific knowledge. This, alongside growing student numbers in higher education, creates pedagogic challenges, especially regards assessment design. Conventional modalities, individual essay writing, costly scale up poorly suited for the development further desired competencies. To address these challenges context first-year economics module, we replaced 1,000-word written assignment group video assignment, where students were required work small teams create three-minute on contemporary economic issue. Focus groups module evaluation questionnaires used elicit students’ perceptions how contributed their learning experience skill development, it compares other modes assessment, well suggestions improved implementation. Our analysis generates insights all aspects. Students reported preference diversity methods, found be positive, engaging but also challenging experience, which provided opportunity collaboration diverse skills.
